All new REALTOR® members must complete a course on the Code of Ethics of the National Association of REALTORS® within the first 180 days of their membership as a condition of membership.
The Board offers several courses throughout the year in cooperation with the RI Association of REALTORS®. The courses are held at the Board office located at 2178 Mendon Road, Suite 400, Cumberland, RI. They are approved for 3 CORE Rhode Island Real Estate licensee continuing education credits and are 3 hours in length. Please see here for our 2017 offerings.
The National Association of REALTORS® also offers an online course through this link. You will be asked to enter your NRDS (National REALTOR® Database System) number. This is your membership identification number with the REALTOR® Association and you all new members receive it in their welcome email from the Northern Rhode Island Board of REALTORS®. There will be an opportunity to locate that number while registering for the course. The online course is not approved for any Rhode Island real estate licensee continuing education credits and is 2 ½ - 3 hours in length.
There are no exceptions to this new member course requirement.
As a point of reference, REALTOR® isn't a synonym for real estate broker or real estate salesperson. A REALTOR®, simply put, is an individual who has voluntarily sought membership in the REALTOR® Association and abides by the Code of Ethics of the NAR. A REALTOR® is someone who is licensed (i.e. salesperson, broker, appraiser, auctioneer, property manager).
